Pwani Volunteer Program : Xperience Swahili culture & conservation work along the Indian ocean (30 days program)
Pwani volunteer program is a new grassroots non profit program set up to support both coastal communities and sea turtle conservation work. It’s run by local people.
The programme is a standard 30-day program in which you will travel to Mombasa, Lamu Island, Mkokoni village, Kiwayu Island, pate Island, the Tana Delta, Funzi Island and Wasini Island individual or in a small group of volunteers from different ages and backgrounds.
Mombasa, 2 nights
First introduction to Kenya, staying with a traditional herbalist, first introduction to the Kiswahili language, learning about Swahili history, sightseeing the historic town
Lamu, 7 nights
Experiencing the every day buzz of a Swahili family, continuing
Kiswahili learning, cooking, arts and crafts workshops, immersing yourself in the island life
Mkokoni, 1 night
Visiting the base of the WWF and the Kenya Wildlife Service, learn about their conservation activities
Kiwayu Island, 7 nights
Assisting in the local primary school, learning how to fish, ride a donkey, make handicrafts, sail a dhow
Kipini Island, 7 nights
Volunteering with the local sea turtle conservation group, patrolling or nesting turtles during the night, sleep on the beach - canoe rides on the Tana
Funzi Island, 2 nights
Conservation work with the Funzi turtle club
Wasini Island, 1 night
Spotting dolphins, snorkelling along the coral reef, watching monkeys in the coastal forest
